Life Without Six

Life without the "Top 6 Allergens" can be difficult. T offers recipes, product and restaurant reviews as well as shopping guides to take some of the bite out of grabbing a bite on a restrictive diet.

Mailbag: Allergy Safe Foods for a “Junk-Food Honey”

cropped-no6logo2.pngEEK Writes: “You requested a challenge on the beef fried rice post. I am mentally preparing myself for a 2-week allergen free challenge in the new year to see if the lifestyle change will help my partner’s allergy issues. His favorite meal is a bacon cheeseburger. I would be very interested to get your opinions on what to purchase to create the most satisfying cheese-less/gluten-less experience possible for my used-to-junk-food honey.”

Alright EEK, here are some tips:

  • Cheese isn’t a problem: We’ve reviewed Daiya’s products and they offer a number of fantastic ones.  I’d check out their frozen pizza which is tasty and should not be a problem if you aren’t removing tomato.
  • Gluten Free products abound: If you are looking for breads and rolls you will have some issues finding stuff without all of the Top 6 allergens.  If you and your honey are willing to keep egg in the diet then you’ll find that most of the frozen GF breads in the supermarket will work for you.  Some contain milk or soy flour so it really depends on which allergens you are targeting.
  • Look for safe brands: While you are in the freezer section, check out Ian’s.  They have everything from chicken nuggets to corn dogs with lots of other products in between.

Recipe: D’s Cheeseburger Dip

  • 1/2 Pound of Lean Ground Beef
  • 6 Strips of Cooked Bacon (Crumbled)
  • 2 Blocks of Daiya Cheddar (Cubed)

Take the beef and brown in a small pot.  Try to break up the meat into small pieces.  Once the beef is browned drain the fat and add the cheese and bacon.  This should take about 10 minutes to become smooth and creamy.  We’d recommend using a strong wavy potato chip for dipping but use whichever allergy safe chip suits your mood.
