Life Without Six

Life without the "Top 6 Allergens" can be difficult. T offers recipes, product and restaurant reviews as well as shopping guides to take some of the bite out of grabbing a bite on a restrictive diet.

Shopping Guide: Trader Joe’s (Part 1)

Logo_staticTrader Joe’s is a specialty store that offers some great allergy safe products and is a lot friendlier to your wallet than some other stores.  The trick here is that the organization of the store is not as helpful as some other high-end groceries.  You will not find an aisle of Gluten Free products but if you are willing to look at labels you will discover a number of products to help you in your cooking aspirations.

The produce section (below) isn’t as comprehensive as some, but you should be able to find all of the basics you’ve come to expect and even some surprises that will help you save time.

D: I’m a big fan of buying pre-chopped veggies like the onions and shallots that Joe’s offers.  Don’t be proud when it comes to food prep.  You are going to be cooking a lot if you are doing an elimination diet.  Save time wherever and however you can.

The frozen section is another place where you will need to look carefully.  Believe it or not, you should be able to find a number of pre-cooked frozen options that we’ll try to review in our Product Reviews.  Also take a peak both at their meats section where you will find marinated, seasoned and even pre-cooked items that should fit most elimination diets.  See if there is a Trader Joe’s by you and take a look around.
